Your key has snapped inside the cylinder and you do not know what to do? How do you get a broken key out of the lock?
Hi, I am Mauro from Ariete Security Doors, and in this article I will explain how to extract a broken key from an armoured door lock.
We will see together that to solve this problem you will need a hook to pull the key out, but that in the end the job is very simple.
How to remove a piece of key from a door lock
Before we start, a quick note: if you do not feel like reading the whole article, you can simply watch this video on how to remove a snapped key from the lock.
Otherwise, read on.
It can happen that the key snaps inside the lock (perhaps with the door closed).
If this happens, do not lose heart.
Many people think you need to use a drill, a magnet, or even that you have to replace the armoured door lock.
Do not worry, none of these steps is necessary.
You only need to follow these three simple steps to solve the problem in a few seconds.
Get hold of a crochet hook
The tool you need to get hold of is a crochet hook, the very one our grandmothers used for knitting.
Crochet hooks come in various sizes, and I recommend you take the smallest one possible, that is the 0.75 size (or 1 at most).
If you do not have a crochet hook to hand, you can use a hairpin or a paperclip and bend the tip with a pair of pliers.
Insert the hook into the cylinder
Insert the hook into the lower part of the cylinder, where the teeth of the key are, with the hook facing towards you.
Pull towards you
Just catch one of the key’s teeth and pull back until you draw out the broken piece.
Pull out the broken part of the key
Now, with your fingers or with the help of a pair of pliers, you can pull the broken key out of the lock.
How to remove a snapped key from a euro cylinder
After publishing the first version of this article, I received several messages like this one:
My key snapped in a lock with a euro cylinder. How can I get it out?
The procedure is different, so let us look at it in detail:
- Try to insert an intact key into the opposite side of the cylinder.
- Give it a few light taps with a hammer.
- If the key snapped straight, it may move enough that you can slide it out with a pair of bent needle-nose pliers.
If you cannot manage it, I am sorry, but the only way to solve it is to drill the euro cylinder below the keyhole.

How to drill the cylinder to extract the snapped key
To get the key out you need to make a hole below the slot where you insert the key.
To make the hole, get yourself a drill and follow these three simple steps:
- Start drilling with a 4 mm bit
- Go over the hole again with a 5 mm bit
- Finally, use a 6 mm bit or an even larger one.
At this point you should be able to pull the broken key out of the cylinder very easily.
How to extract a broken key from a scooter lock
And what if your key has snapped in the lock of your scooter, your car or your top box?
Do not worry, the procedure is exactly the same.
Get hold of the crochet hook and follow the three steps I showed you earlier.
You will see that you will manage to pull it out in a few seconds.

Salve, purtroppo a me quella che si è rotta non è una semplice chiave, è di quelle col codice che invece che essere seghettata ha degli incavi/svasature ai lati della chiave, quindi con l’uncinetto non si può prendere. Hai cortesemente una soluzione?

Purtroppo non ho la soluzione per una chiave di questa tipologia.
Per estrarla devi per forza forare il cilindro.

Buongiorno,
Ho letto l’articolo, peraltro molto interessante.
Mi si è spezzata la chiave nel cilindretto, però dopo che ha fatto un mezzo giro, quindi non dritta.
Inserendo la chiave nel cilindro dalla parte opposta e dando dei colpetti la chiave rotta si sposta di due millimetri
ma non riesco comunque a tirarla via. Come posso forare il cilindro per estrarlo?

Devi fare un foro sotto al taglio in cui inserisci la chiave.
Per fare il foro munisciti di un trapano, poi:
1) inizia a forare utilizzando una punta da 4
2) ripassa il foro con una punta da 5
3) infine utilizza una punta da 6 o ancora più grossa.

E ma cosi il cilindro è andato ci vuole il nuovo?-

Se la chiave ti si è spezzata all’interno di un cilindro europeo, la procedura è la seguente:
1) Inserisci una chiave integra nella parte opposta del cilindro.
2) Dai dei colpetti con un martello.
3) Se la chiave si è rotta dritta, può darsi che si sposti tanto da poterla sfilare con una pinza a beccuccio piegato.
Se invece non ci riesci l’unico modo per risolvere è forare il cilindro sotto il foro della chiave e sostituirlo successivamente con uno nuovo.

Se la parte interna non è provvista di fessura ed è quindi impossibile utilizzare la procedura con la chiave integra?

Ciao Daniele, nel caso di serratura a cilindro europeo, la procedura è differente:
1) Prova ad inserire una chiave integra nella parte opposta del cilindro.
2) Dai dei colpetti con un martello.
3) Se la chiave si è spezzata dritta, può darsi che si sposti tanto da poterla sfilare con una pinza a beccuccio piegato.
4) Se non ci riesci mi dispiace ma l’unico modo per risolvere è forare il cilindro sotto il foro della chiave.
