In recent years, aesthetics and personalisation have become increasingly important criteria when choosing doors and windows.
Different companies have designed and built more original and refined solutions to meet customers’ new needs. Even armoured doors have not escaped this new trend.
The armoured door is the main element of the home that protects your loved ones and your most precious belongings.
Security is certainly the top priority, but it is also very important to choose doors with a pleasant, harmonious look (since they are often bulky and conspicuous) that blend in with your interior style.
In this post we will discover together the features of flush-to-wall armoured doors, the difference with flush-fitting wall-recessed armoured doors, the prices and where to buy them.

ToggleWhat are wall-recessed armoured doors?

A wall-recessed armoured door has no jambs or architrave trims, meaning you only see the leaf, positioned on the same level as the wall, as if it were an integral part of it.
Imagine drawing a rectangle on the wall with a pencil and that this could magically open and close, just like a door.
The visual effect of the wall-recessed armoured door is more or less this.
What are flush-to-wall armoured doors?

The flush-to-wall armoured door, on the other hand, has an effect similar to the wall-recessed one but also leaves the frame trim visible.
What is the difference between flush-to-wall and wall-recessed doors?
In short, the difference between flush-to-wall and wall-recessed is that in the first case you only see the leaf in the wall, in the second you also see the frame, on the three sides of the leaf.

Both models represent the most modern expression of an armoured door, devoted to design: fresh interpretations of space and aesthetics, originally created for internal doors and which, in recent years, have gained ground for armoured ones too.
How are flush-to-wall and wall-recessed armoured doors made?
Stainless steel frame
Wall-recessed and flush-to-wall concealed doors are made possible thanks to special stainless steel frames, placed between the wall and the leaf and reshaped to accommodate the plasterboard and plaster of the walls, disappearing from view.
Companies often set up these frames to pair them with the leaves of a classic door.
So you can choose the leaf model of a traditional door and then use the frame to give it the flush effect with the wall.
Concealed hinges
The side hinges, which allow the door to open and close, are concealed, meaning they are built into the frame and leaf and cannot be seen.
Armoured doors with concealed hinges can open up to a maximum of 110° with a restrictor arm on the upper side (for flush-to-wall armoured doors) and up to 180° of opening for wall-recessed doors.
They do not get in the way of the perimeter insulating seals, ensuring correct thermal and acoustic insulation.
Are concealed armoured doors secure?
The level of burglar resistance, the thermal and acoustic insulation are the same as a traditional armoured door, and you can also choose the same handles, locks, accessories and panels.
Naturally, electronic locks are also available, which can be opened with a card, numeric keypads or fingerprint readers, and you can even manage opening remotely, wherever you are, with dedicated apps on your smartphone.
What are the standard sizes of flush armoured doors?
The standard sizes of a single-leaf flush-to-wall/wall-recessed armoured door are 80 to 90 cm in width and 200 to 210 cm in height.
They can be made to custom sizes up to a maximum of 110 cm in width and 250 cm in height, within a given maximum weight.
For some models, however, there is a limit of 100 cm for the width and 240 cm for the height.

It is not possible to have them in larger sizes for reasons of technical feasibility, warranty and functionality.
It is not possible to make them glazed or with glass inserts for reasons of maximum weight. Armoured glass has, in fact, a significant specific weight within the overall door.
All entrance doors generally open by pulling inwards, meaning the leaf (seen from inside the home) comes towards you. In some (rare) cases it is necessary to make it with outward opening, often for reasons of space. This last type of opening is not available for flush-to-wall or wall-recessed doors.
It is possible to make flush-to-wall and wall-recessed armoured doors for outdoor use too, meaning more or less exposed to the weather and to heat and cold, for detached houses or villas.
Flush-to-wall armoured door price
What are the prices of wall-recessed and flush-to-wall armoured doors?
Wall-recessed and flush-to-wall entrance doors tend to require a slightly higher investment than traditional models.
The concealed frames and hinges have the greatest impact on the cost.
Usually, flush-to-wall concealed doors cost slightly less to invest in than wall-recessed doors.
Since they have special frames and the final aesthetic result is essential, correct fitting becomes indispensable.
Fitting is already hugely important for a classic armoured door: millimetre variations in the leaf, frame and hinges create immediate problems with insulation, security and functionality.
Even more so for a flush-to-wall/wall-recessed door, where any tiny imprecision is highlighted by the fact that it is integrated into the wall.
Therefore, you need to turn to specialised and well-organised companies that have been dealing with this type of door for some time, with qualified fitters.
Otherwise the risk is not only of getting an unwanted effect, but of ruining the very reason for the choice, aesthetic beauty.
| Internal (Class RC3) | External (Class RC3) | Internal (Class RC4) | External (Class RC4) | |
| Standard | from €2,700 | from €3,100 | from €2,900 | from €3,600 |
| Custom size | from €2,900 | from €3,300 | from €3,100 | from €3,800 |
Indicative prices including fitting, with standard internal and external panels, standard handles.
Why choose a flush-to-wall concealed door?
The choice of an internal flush-to-wall entrance door or (even more so) a wall-recessed one is mainly aesthetic.
These doors are contemporary design elements, elegant and minimalist, that fit well with modern furnishings, but also classic ones, where the leaf is painted like the wall, disappearing into it.
What is more, they are less bulky and “cumbersome” but with the same level of protection and insulation as classic models; they make rooms brighter and more functional, making interior spaces feel larger and more open.
Flush-to-wall and wall-recessed doors serve a dual function: on the one hand the door built into the wall becomes part of it, with its finishes and shades of colour, on the other it stands out like a precious piece of furniture, a complement to your interior.
So security, thermal insulation, practicality… but also minimalist elegance and style.
