Is it possible to soundproof an armoured door?
The answer is simple: it depends on how the door was designed.
If you already have an armoured door fitted and you are trying to soundproof it afterwards, in most cases it is not possible to achieve a truly effective result.
The reason is often unclear to anyone outside the trade.
Noise, in fact, does not really pass through the door itself, but through the air.
And air gets through wherever it finds even the smallest opening.
This is exactly where the problem starts.
In practice, the most critical points are always the same: the contact between leaf and frame, the lower part of the door, and all those tiny gaps that look irrelevant to the eye but that, acoustically, make an enormous difference.
For this reason, many of the solutions you find online, such as self-adhesive seals, panels applied afterwards or DIY acoustic kits, do not really solve the problem.
They can reduce the noise slightly, but they do not turn a standard door into a soundproof one.
An armoured door becomes genuinely soundproof only if it was designed for this purpose from the very start, with high-density materials, a perfectly tight closure and a system able to eliminate the passage of air along the whole perimeter.
In other words, an armoured door cannot be soundproofed afterwards. It is designed that way from the outset.
What are the features of soundproof armoured doors?
To truly insulate against noise, an armoured door must have a few essential features:
- heavy internal materials (high density), which help to block sound
- a well-sealed closure, so that no air gets through (and therefore no noise)
- attention to the area beneath the door, where the most noise often enters
- proper fitting, because even a good door fitted badly does not work
Only when these elements work together do you get a concrete result.
To achieve real acoustic insulation, an armoured door cannot simply be “heavier” or “more robust”.
It must be designed as a complete system, in which every element helps to reduce the passage of noise.
The first essential aspect is the internal mass of the door.
Inside the leaf, high-density materials are inserted, such as compressed mineral wool or other specific insulants, whose job is to absorb and dampen the sound waves.
Without this internal structure, sound passes through the door far more easily.
The second element, even more important, is the air-tightness.
Noise behaves exactly like air: it gets through wherever it finds space.
Even the smallest gap is enough to let annoying sounds in, such as voices or noise from the landing.
For this reason a soundproof armoured door must guarantee an extremely precise closure, with seals that work under compression along the whole perimeter.
A point that is often underestimated is the lower part of the door, which is one of the main routes for noise to get through.
Without an effective system in this area, even a well-built door loses much of its acoustic effectiveness.
Finally, the way the door is fitted is essential.

Which noises can a soundproof armoured door block?
An armoured door with good acoustic insulation is not just useful “in theory”, but above all in everyday life.
When it is designed correctly, it can noticeably reduce the most common noises coming from outside or from the stairwell.
We are talking, for example, about very frequent situations: people talking on the landing, the sound of the television or music from the neighbours, the constant opening and closing of communal doors or the lift.
Outside noises too, such as traffic or people passing by below your home, are perceived far less.
The result is not absolute silence, but something much more concrete: a calmer environment, where noises become distant and less intrusive.
It is important, though, to have the right expectations.
An acoustic armoured door works very well on “airborne” noises, that is, those that travel through the air.
Louder or structural noises, such as vibrations of the building or very heavy impacts, can be attenuated but not completely eliminated.

Many people think that all armoured doors also offer good acoustic insulation.
In reality, that is not the case.
A traditional armoured door is built to guarantee security against break-ins, but it is not designed to truly block out noise.
A soundproof armoured door, on the other hand, is engineered to do both things: protect the home and reduce the passage of sound.
The difference is not theoretical: you notice it straight away in daily life.
A standard door, even if new or of good quality, almost always has small air leaks: along the frame, at the closure and above all in the lower part.
And that is exactly where the noise gets through.
What is more, the internal structure of a traditional door is not designed for acoustics.
This means that sound passes through it more easily, especially in the case of voices, the television or noise from the landing.
A soundproof armoured door, instead, is designed as a complete system.
Inside it uses high-density materials, which help to dampen the sound.
The closure is engineered to be as airtight as possible, keeping the passage of air to a minimum.
The lower part, often the most critical point, is treated with specific solutions to prevent acoustic leaks.
But above all, it is fitted using precise techniques that eliminate every possible passage between frame and wall, which is one of the main causes of noise leaks.

Armoured door acoustic insulation: how much does it really insulate?
When we talk about acoustic insulation, there is a precise value that lets you understand how effective a door is: it is called sound reduction and it is measured in decibels (dB).
Put simply, the higher this value, the more the door is able to reduce the noise that enters the home.
To make it clearer:
- around 20 dB: low insulation, the noise is clearly audible
- around 30 dB: fair insulation, the noise is attenuated
- around 40 dB: good insulation, noises become much less noticeable
- over 45 dB: high insulation, great acoustic comfort
An armoured door designed for acoustic insulation can reach roughly between 39 and 46 dB, significantly reducing noise coming from the landing or from outside.
It is important, though, to make one thing clear: no door eliminates noise completely.
A good acoustic door reduces it noticeably, making the environment much quieter and more liveable, but very loud or sudden sounds can still be perceived, even if in a greatly attenuated form.
When we talk about acoustic insulation, the numbers can seem hard to interpret.
But what does cutting 40 decibels really mean?
In terms of perception, a reduction of around 10 dB is equivalent to halving the perceived noise.
Saying that a door insulates by 40 or 45 dB is correct from a technical point of view, but what really matters is understanding what changes in everyday life.
Put simply, sound reduction at this level means that:
- noises from the landing become much more attenuated
- voices are perceived as less clear and more distant
- outside traffic becomes a light background, no longer intrusive
- sudden sounds (such as doors slamming or the lift) become less annoying
This does not mean eliminating noise completely.
But it does mean moving from a situation where the noise is constant and disturbing to one where it is manageable and no longer affects the quality of life at home.

A cheap armoured door may look similar from the outside, but it is unlikely to guarantee the same level of acoustic insulation.
This is because the final result does not depend on a single element, but on the combination of materials, design and fitting.
In other words, two doors can look the same but behave completely differently once fitted.

Per una buona porta blindata in classe 4 da interni puoi spendere da un minimo di 3.500 a un massimo di 6.000€.
Diffida dalle porte blindate economiche, perchè non sono in grado di garantire alla tua casa e alla tua famiglia la sicurezza che merita.

salve, ho insonorizzato 3 pareti e il pavimento di una camera da letto per evitare i rumori provenienti dall’abitazione del piano di sotto (urla, pianti e corse di bambini, lancio di oggetti, scarico e rubinetti del bagno adiacente alla camera)
la ditta che eseguito i lavori mi ha detto che il punto debole è la porta interna della camera realizzata in alluminio che hanno insonorizzato con guarnizioni e pannelli vari. e gomma espansa .ma si avvertono ancora rumori sia dal piano di sotto che dall’interno della mia abitazione. quale soluzione mi suggeriste per risolvere il mio problema di rumori? grazie.

Come ho scritto all’interno dell’articolo, se la porta non è progettata per l’insonorizzazione già in fase di costruzione, non c’è nulla da fare.
Puoi provare a installare un paraspifferi, ma è molto difficile che tu possa ottenere dei risultati in termini di insonorizzazione acustica.
L’unica soluzione definitiva, è quella di sostituire la tua porta interna con una porta blindata da camera da letto insonorizzata.

vorrei sapere fino a quanti decibel riesce a ‘trattenere’ in uscita (dall’appartamento) e in entrata (dal pianerottolo) una porta blindata insonorizzata. E anche se aumenta l’insonorizzazione in base anche al livello di sicurezza.
E ancora, se oltre alla porta blindata è importante insonorizzare anche la parete circostante.

1) Una buona porta blindata insonorizzata è in grado di abbattere fino a 44.8db.
2) Si, una porta blindata in classe di sicurezza 4 è generalmente più insonorizzata rispetto ad una in classe 3.
3) Ovviamente dipende dai casi specifici, ma nella grande maggioranza non è necessario insonorizzare anche la parete circostante: una buona porta blindata insonorizzata riesce ad abbattere da sola una grande quantità di rumore.

Abito in condominio e dalla porta blindata entra ogni tipo di rumore o spiffero, addirittura si sentono le vetture che passano in mezzo la strada. Ho provato con varie registrazioni del portone esistente ma invano. Cosa mi consiglia di fare visto che anche il telaio della porta blindata è a vista e sono presenti delle fessure?

Come ho scritto nell’articolo, purtroppo non c’è modo di insonorizzare una porta blindata esistente.
Se la porta non è stata progettata e realizzata con materiali idonei per abbattere il rumore, non c’è niente da fare.
L’unica soluzione è sostituirla.
