Level of security: the burglar resistance classes

For a front door to be truly secure, it must have a certification.

The security classes are five, like hotel stars or TripAdvisor ratings.

They range from level 1, the lowest, up to level 5 (doors for banks, jewellers and the like).

There is also a level 6, but it is reserved for military complexes, embassies or nuclear plants, and I will not consider it in this article.

How is a security level defined?

To establish the security grade of armoured doors, the certifier dresses up as a burglar and simulates breaking into a door.

Based on the time taken to open the door and the tools that had to be used, the security grade is defined, commonly known as the burglar resistance class.

So, which burglar resistance class is right for me?

The front doors of flats in a block of flats are normally RC3 or RC4, while for detached houses or independent homes an RC4 is always recommended.

My advice is to buy, in both cases, an RC4 armoured door (the highest level achievable for a private home), which can guarantee an excellent level of security for your home and your family.

Protecting the key: lock, cylinder and defender

If an armoured door were a person, the lock would be its heart.

That said, a good lock is not enough on its own.

You need a good cylinder with a key that only you can copy.

But even that is not enough.

The most important thing, in fact, is protecting the key.

But what protects the key?

It is a device called a “defender“, which is nothing more than a metal body fitted on the outside of the door.

A good defence will make every break-in attempt useless.
