A certified armoured door is a door whose performance has been measured in the laboratory and guaranteed by an independent body. Put that way it sounds simple, but inside that sentence hide three words that get used as synonyms and are not: classification, certification and CE marking.
Classification is the result of a single test on one sample door. A laboratory takes a door, puts it through the trials and assigns it a class. It applies to that door, at that moment.
Certification goes a step further. Beyond the laboratory test, an external certification body inspects the manufacturer’s plants and repeats the checks on the production every year. In practice, certification guarantees that not just that sample, but every door in that range meets the declared class.
The difference is real. A door that is only classified tells you “this sample passed the test”.
A certified door tells you “every door that leaves the factory meets the standard”. For you, the buyer, that is the difference between a promise and a verified guarantee.
CE marking is something else again. It is not a mark of quality: it is the legal requirement that allows the door to be sold on the European market, under the CE marking rules.
It declares the product’s performance, but it is the manufacturer who applies it. It is mandatory, yet on its own it does not tell you whether those values have been checked by a third party.
Keep this in mind as you read the acronyms on a quote: a serious door is certified by an external body, not simply “compliant”.
The 5 certifications of an armoured door
A complete armoured door is tested on five different fronts. Each one has its own European standard and measures something precise: how well it resists a burglar, how well it insulates against the cold, how well it stops noise, how well it keeps out air and water.

Burglar resistance: EN 1627
This is the flagship certification, the one that measures real security against burglars. The EN 1627 standard splits doors into six resistance classes, based on the tools used to break in and the minutes the door holds out.
For a home, the classes that matter are RC3 and RC4. An RC3 door holds out for about 5 minutes against tools such as a crowbar and a hand drill. An RC4 door holds out for about 10 minutes even against power drills, saws and chisels.

CE marking (EN 14351-1)
CE marking is the umbrella that gathers all the door’s declared performance. The EN 14351-1 standard requires the manufacturer to declare the values for resistance, insulation and tightness before placing the door on the market.
It is mandatory by law: a front door sold without CE marking is non-compliant. Be aware, though: the marking declares the values, but it is the manufacturer who applies it. That is why it matters to have third-party certification behind it, which actually verifies those values.
Acoustic insulation: EN ISO 717-1
This certification measures how many decibels the door manages to block. The figure is called sound reduction and is expressed in dB: the higher it is, the more the door blocks noise from the landing, the lift and the traffic.

Thermal insulation: Ud transmittance
Thermal insulation tells you how much heat the door lets escape. The technical figure is the Ud transmittance, measured in line with the EN ISO 10077 standard: the lower it is, the better the door holds in the warmth in winter and the cool in summer.

Air, water and wind tightness (EN 12207/12208/12210)
These three tests together measure how well the door keeps the outdoors out. Air permeability (EN 12207) is about draughts, watertightness (EN 12208) about rain getting in, and wind resistance (EN 12210) about the pressure of the gusts.
They matter above all on doors that open straight onto the outside, like those of a detached house or an exposed entrance. Good tightness means no water under the threshold and no cold draught slipping in around the edges.
Who certifies armoured doors
Serious certifications are issued by an independent body, never by the manufacturer alone. This is the most useful filter you have for working out whether a door is worth what it costs.
The system works like this. The laboratories that carry out the tests must be accredited, that is, recognised as competent by a national body.
In Italy this body is ACCREDIA, the single Italian accreditation authority. An accredited laboratory gives the tests an official standing.
Above it sits the certification body, the third party that not only looks at the test but checks the manufacturer’s production and reverifies it every year. It is the body that guarantees you continuity over time, not a snapshot from a single day.
For locks, cylinders and protection against key duplication there is then a dedicated reference, ICIM (the Italian Institute for Industrial Certification in Mechanical Engineering), which specifically certifies security locking systems.
And how do you check all of this in practice? Look at the door’s label.
A certified door shows the certification body’s logo beneath the CE mark, and the certificate is entered in a public register you can consult.
A door that is only classified, by contrast, carries a simple wording such as “burglar resistance class RC3 to EN 1627 in the laboratory”. If you find only this, you are missing the third-party check.
