We asked colour designer Chiara Bevegni to tell us what green really is: where it comes from, why it relaxes us the moment we look at it, and how it can give your entrance a calm you feel as you walk in.

Green is the colour your eye reads best.

Green sits exactly in the middle of the visible spectrum, between 495 and 570 nanometres, and that is no accident: it is the point of greatest sensitivity in our visual system, the wavelength our eyes adapted to over millennia of evolution in nature. The cones in the eye work together in balance, asking no effort at all of the lens. For the eye, looking at a green door is about as restful as it gets.

A colour the body recognises.

For most of our evolution green meant water, food and shelter. That is why the mind reads it as a signal of nourishment, stability and renewal: its presence lowers cortisol levels and slows the heartbeat. Bringing green into the home, Chiara Bevegni explains, means resetting the nervous system and returning it to the balance that the chaos of modern life takes away.

From rare pigment to the colour of comfort.

For centuries a stable green was hard to achieve: the starting point was mineral pigments such as malachite. In the eighteenth century garden green arrived in the aristocratic houses of Europe, which were trying to bring the outdoors visually inside. In the Victorian era it became a must for dining rooms and studies, and established itself as the colour of intellectual comfort and connection with nature. Today we call it biophilic design.

The right green is chosen next to your wall.

The same green changes its face depending on what is around it. Against an ochre yellow wall it evokes a warm, natural welcome, like a wood kissed by the sun, and speaks of earth, vitality and a very refined rural nostalgia. Against a white wall the effect is one of absolute clarity: green takes centre stage on its own and brings freshness and brightness to everyone who walks in. The wall you already have decides which green is right for you.

Every green tells a different story.

There is no such thing as green: there are greens. Sage, desaturated and powdery, welcomes you with a discreet embrace and is the star of the Provençal style. Bottle, deep and woodland, gives dignity and protection, as in English cottages. Saturated emerald, next to brass details, becomes a statement of luxury and vitality. This is where sage green belongs. Its desaturated, powdery quality carries a timeless delicacy: the door becomes a link with the garden and sits well with limed wood, linen and handmade ceramics. A green that does not try to impress, but to welcome you with a discreet embrace.

Discreet blending, the door becomes part of the space

A muted, desaturated green, such as sage, next to pale woods and natural fabrics. The door does not vanish: it blends in discreetly and brings a piece of the garden into the house, without ever shouting.

Three things that matter more than the colour

Elegant to look at, impossible to force.

Behind a panel this beautiful there is first of all a real armoured door, in burglar resistance class RC3 or RC4. You choose the green for the style; what protects you is the lock, the cylinder and the steel you cannot see. You look at the colour every day; the security is what you feel.

Italy's most secure armoured door

A chrome-steel and nickel cylinder, and a square defender with chamfered corners that nobody else makes: it cuts off the scaffolding-pipe technique. No attempted break-in has ever succeeded on an Ariete door.

The quiet you take back

The fire-resistant mineral-wool insulation stops the noise of the stairwell, the lift and the street. Close your front door and the noise outside drops away at once: sound reduction reaches up to 44.8 dB. Very few doors insulate as well as this.

Goodbye draughts, inside and out

A double seal and a draught-excluder blade with five air chambers seal the opening: the warmth stays in, the cold of the landing stays out, and smells from the stairwell disappear. A lighter bill, more comfort, twelve months a year.

It does not fade in the sun

The powder coating, baked in an oven, is stable under UV rays: the green stays rich and even over the years, including on external models exposed to the sun.

It forgives marks

Mid and deep shades, such as moss and bottle, hide fingerprints, dust and small scratches far better than a white. A pale sage asks for a little more attention, but it is still more forgiving than a pure white.

Simple to clean

A smooth surface: a damp cloth and you are done. No special products, no more care than any other colour.

Frequently asked questions about green armoured doors

Does a green armoured door fade in the sun?

No, provided the paint finish is a good one. Ariete doors use powder-coating cycles baked in an oven, stable under UV rays: the green stays rich and even over the years, including on external models exposed to the sun. Fading is a problem with cheap paints, not with ours.

Can I choose the exact shade of green I have in mind?

Yes. The most requested references are moss green RAL 6005, bottle green RAL 6007 and sage green RAL 6021, but we can produce any shade on the RAL scale. If you already have a green at home, in the shutters or the window frames, we compare it in the showroom and calibrate the door to match, so the pairing is spot on.

Which green should I choose if I have a garden?

Usually a muted, natural one, moss or sage: it sits alongside the real green without competing, and ties the house to what surrounds it. A deep bottle works when the facade is pale and you want the green armoured front door to be the fixed point of the whole entrance. Bring us two photos of your home and we will decide together in the showroom, in front of the samples.

Can I have the door green outside and another colour inside?

Of course. The inner and outer panels are independent: outside you put the green that ties in with the facade, the garden or the shutters, and inside you choose the colour you love, or reproduce the panel your building requires. Our in-house joinery workshop makes both to measure.

Does green work for a small or poorly lit entrance too?

It depends on the shade. A bottle or a fir green is deep, and in a very small, dark entrance it closes the space in: there a sage or a pale green works better, bringing calm without weighing things down. In a large or bright entrance, on the other hand, even a dark green gives depth and elegance.

Is a green front door a risky choice?

Quite the opposite. Green has been on the doors and shutters of Italian houses for as long as anyone can remember, and it entered the great houses of Europe in the eighteenth century to bring the garden indoors. It is not a passing fashion: it is the colour our eye reads better than any other, as Chiara Bevegni explains above. If anything the opposite is true: a green door has character where a thousand brown doors all look alike.

Can I have a green armoured door with glass?

Yes, and it is a request we get a lot on green in particular. You choose the glass on the Luce and Aurora models, and it is anti-shatter and anti-sledgehammer: the light comes into the entrance without taking anything away from the armour. The green stays on the panel that frames the glass, so you decide whether to keep the door all one colour or to play on a contrast with the frame. A bottle green next to glass changes a good deal depending on the light coming through: in the showroom you see it before you choose.

How much does a green armoured door cost?

A green Ariete armoured door starts at around €2,900 + VAT for internal models and goes up to €10,000 + VAT for external versions, with glass or electronic. The range is wide because every door is made to measure: the price depends on the model, the burglar resistance class, the dimensions and the finishes.
