We asked colour designer Chiara Bevegni to tell us what the colour white really is: where it comes from, why it makes us feel good and how it can turn a simple door into the very thing that lights up your home.

Before it was elegant, white kept you healthy.

Few people know it, but white was not always the elegant colour we know today. It used to be applied to walls with quicklime, because it genuinely disinfected: it removed germs and bacteria from every corner. That is why it was the colour of the humblest homes, while the houses of the wealthy showed off bright shades and decoration to display their prestige. Then its ability to make rooms bright and clean won out over everything, and from the colour of the humblest homes it became everyone's choice.

Is white a colour? Yes, and it is the fullest of them all.

You often hear it said that "white is not a colour", but that is wrong. It all starts with light: when it hits an object, the eye turns it into signals that reach the brain, and this is how what we call colour is born. Pure white is the sum of all visible light put together. It is a colour in every sense, in fact it is the fullest of them all.

A white entrance fills you with light.

Inside the eye you have cells that read three colours: red, green and blue, the same ones your TV and phone screens work with. To see white, these cells all have to switch on together and work at full power. A very strong signal reaches the brain, which you perceive as energy, brightness and openness. That is why you instinctively link white to cleanliness, to new things, to happy moments.

The right white is chosen next to your wall.

And here lies the thing that makes the difference between a beautiful white door and one that clashes. No white is truly pure: each one carries a tiny trace of another pigment, which makes it warmer, cooler or tending towards grey. If you buy two whites at different times or in different shops, you risk them not matching: placed side by side on the same wall, that tiny difference becomes an obvious, irritating mark. That is why the white of your door should be chosen by looking at the wall that will sit beside it.

The real risk, when you bring a white door into your home, is that it looks flat and soulless. There is only one way to avoid it: by giving the white some volume. A grooved panel, an engraving, a raised geometry turn the colour into a play of light and shadow. Here white plays the card of timeless elegance. Frequently asked questions about white front doors

Does the white of an armoured door turn yellow over time?

No, not if the paint finish is of good quality. Ariete doors use powder-coating cycles oven-baked and stable under UV light: the white stays bright for years, even on external models exposed to the sun. Yellowing affects cheap paints, not ours.

Can I choose the exact white I have in mind?

Yes. As well as the most requested standard whites, pure white RAL 9010 and cool white RAL 9016, we produce any shade on the RAL scale. If you already have a white at home, in the showroom we compare it and calibrate the door to match, so the pairing is perfect.

What is the difference between a painted white door and a laminated one?

Painting gives a full, even white, ideal for modern, minimalist styles. Laminate and veneer allow textured finishes, such as a Scandinavian white-wood effect. In the showroom you can touch both and choose the right one for your home.

Can I have the door white on the inside and a different colour on the outside?

Of course. The inner and outer panels are independent: inside you choose the white you love, outside you can fit a different colour or reproduce the panel required by the block of flats. Our in-house joinery makes both to measure.

Does a white door get dirty or scratched more easily?

No. The Ariete painted surface is smooth and hard-wearing: it cleans with a damp cloth and holds no more dirt than any other colour. White gives the impression of getting dirtier, but in practice it cleans like any other colour.

Is white suitable for the external panel in a block of flats too?

It depends on the building’s regulations. If the shared aesthetic allows it, white is perfect. If not, we reproduce the required panel on the outside and keep the white on the inside, where you are free to choose as you prefer.

How much does a white armoured door cost?

A white Ariete armoured door starts at around €2,900 + VAT for internal models and goes up to €10,000 + VAT for external versions, with glass or electronic. The range is wide because every door is made to measure: the price depends on the model, the burglar resistance class, the dimensions and the finishes you choose, inside and out.
