We asked colour designer Chiara Bevegni to tell us what red really is: why we feel it before we even see it, where its history of power and prestige comes from, and how it can give your entrance a character that never goes unnoticed.

You feel red before you even see it.

Red occupies the far end of the visible spectrum, the end with the longest wavelength, between 625 and 740 nanometres. The cones in the retina that specialise in long wavelengths send the brain an intense electrical signal: this is why red is not simply seen; it is almost felt physically. It reaches the nervous system before any other colour.

A door that seems to come towards you.

There is an optical phenomenon that explains why red always seems closer to us: it is called chromatic aberration. The lens of the eye has to make a greater focusing effort for long wavelengths, exactly as if the object were physically nearer. That effort creates a sense of advancing: a red door seems to step out towards you and takes centre stage in the entrance.

From the ochres of the caves to the courts of Europe.

Red is the primordial colour of human history: the first pigments of cave paintings were red ochres, a symbol of life and of power. In ancient Rome, Pompeian Red was not an indulgence: it was a mark of wealth on the walls of the triclinia. Then the Renaissance and the Baroque made it the colour of the courts, in damasks and velvets, to give solemnity to noble interiors.

It does not clash: it challenges the stillness of the room and turns the classic into a bolder exercise in style. Modern and contemporary

In a space of clean lines, concrete and neutrals, red becomes an architectural focal point. It recalls no history: it emphasises the purity of the geometry around it, and the door turns into a functional work of art. It is the element that brings energy and conviviality to a design that, without it, would risk staying cold and impersonal.

Eclectic

Discreet blending, the door becomes part of the space

A red as deep as ruby, next to dark woods, mouldings and warm fabrics. The door does not shout: it leans into the room and gives it a noble note, the kind you notice on second glance.

Intentional contrast, the door takes centre stage

A full red against a mid-grey, white or concrete wall. The contrast is sharp and deliberate: the entrance becomes dramatic and the eye goes there and nowhere else.

Three things that matter more than the colour

Elegant to look at, impossible to force.

Behind a panel this bold there is first of all a real armoured door, in burglar resistance class RC3 or RC4. You choose the red for the style; what protects you is the lock, the cylinder and the steel you cannot see. You look at the colour every day; the security is what you feel.

Italy's most secure armoured door

A chrome-steel and nickel cylinder, and a square defender with chamfered corners that nobody else makes: it cuts off the scaffolding-pipe technique. No attempted break-in has ever succeeded on an Ariete door.

The quiet you take back

The fire-resistant mineral-wool insulation stops the noise of the stairwell, the lift and the street. Close your front door and the noise outside drops away at once: sound reduction reaches up to 44.8 dB. Very few doors insulate as well as this.

Goodbye draughts, inside and out

A double seal and a draught-excluder blade with five air chambers seal the opening: the warmth stays in, the cold of the landing stays out, and smells from the stairwell disappear. A lighter bill, more comfort, twelve months a year.

It does not fade in the sun

The powder coating, baked in an oven, is stable under UV rays: the red stays rich and even over the years, including on external models exposed to the sun.

It forgives marks

A full red hides fingerprints, dust and small scratches far better than a white. It is a colour that gets noticed from a distance but that, close up, asks for less attention than a pale shade.

Simple to clean

A smooth surface: a damp cloth and you are done. No special products, no more care than any other colour.

Frequently asked questions about red armoured doors

Does a red armoured door fade in the sun?

No, provided the paint finish is a good one. Ariete doors use powder-coating cycles baked in an oven, stable under UV rays: the red stays rich and even over the years, including on external models exposed to the sun. Fading is a problem with cheap paints, not with ours.

Can I choose the exact shade of red I have in mind?

Yes. The most requested references are ruby red RAL 3003, deep and noble, and flame red RAL 3000, full and vivid, but we can produce any shade on the RAL scale. If you already have a red at home, in the window frames or in a piece of furniture, we compare it in the showroom and calibrate the door to match.

Does red become tiring over time?

It depends how much of it you use and which one you choose. On a whole wall it can weigh on you; on a door it does not: there red works as an accent, and that is exactly the right dose. If you are worried about tiring of it, we go for a deep ruby, which has more nobility than brightness to it. If you want energy, flame is made for exactly that. In the showroom you see them side by side and you know at once which side you are on.

Can I have the door red outside and another colour inside?

Of course. The inner and outer panels are independent: outside you put the red that ties in with the facade, and inside you choose the colour you love, or reproduce the panel your building requires. Our in-house joinery workshop makes both to measure.

Does red work for a small or poorly lit entrance too?

It is worth thinking about. Red is a colour that advances; it seems to come towards you. In a very small entrance it can close the space in. There it is better to keep the walls pale and let the red sit on the door alone. In a large entrance, on the other hand, it does exactly the job you chose it for: it takes centre stage.

Is a red door too bold a choice?

It is an energetic choice, and it is meant to be. But red on front doors is not a recent fashion: it is the colour humans have always used to say life and power, from the ochres of cave paintings to Pompeian Red and on to the velvets of the European courts. If anything the opposite is true: where a thousand doors look alike, yours is the one people remember.

Can I have a red armoured door with glass?

Yes. You choose the glass on the Luce and Aurora models, and it is anti-shatter and anti-sledgehammer: the light comes into the entrance without taking anything away from the armour. The red stays on the panel that frames the glass, and the contrast between the solid colour and the transparency is one of the finest effects you can get on an armoured door.

How much does a red armoured door cost?

A red Ariete armoured door starts at around €2,900 + VAT for internal models and goes up to €10,000 + VAT for external versions, with glass or electronic. The range is wide because every door is made to measure: the price depends on the model, the burglar resistance class, the dimensions and the finishes.
